Mr. Michael D'Andrea
Instructor in Science and Mathematics (grades 9-12)
Michael D’Andrea studied engineering at the United States Naval Academy and then continued his studies in Pensacola, training as a pilot. “I saw first hand how the critical thinking and the systematic approach to problem solving learned in a STEM education prepares you to take on real world challenges. My goal is to help students gain an appreciation for these tools, and see how they apply even if the student is not looking for a future career as an engineer or a research scientist.” During his time teaching at the Virginia Military Institute he became aware of the poor formation that many college students had received in their secondary schools. His interest in becoming part of the solution to this problem led him to St. Thomas More Academy, where he enjoys teaching science and mathematics courses, coaching the swim team, and advising the tech theater crew.
LCDR D’Andrea graduated with a B.S. in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy, and was selected for flight training. After qualifying as a Naval Aviator, he completed deployments with the USS Essex and USS Bon Homme Richard out of Sasebo, Japan, and with the 2515thNaval Air Ambulance detachment out Basrah, Iraq flying the MH-60S Knighthawk. He also qualified as a Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer supporting 2nd ANGLICO and 10thMarines, and worked on the operations staff for the Second Marine Expeditionary Force. He taught courses in leadership, risk management, and naval weapons systems at Virginia Military Institute.
